It is about 25 km inland from the Sea of Japan at the southern end of the Fukuchiyama Valley, and is surrounded by mountains to the south, west, and east. The city was founded on April 1, 1937. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 82,425 and a population density of 146 persons per km2. The total area is 552.57 km2.
